About the Meeting
Midcareer professionals often face complex challenges as they navigate the transition to senior leadership roles within academic medicine and science. The Midcareer Faculty Leadership Development Seminar is designed to support that journey by providing the knowledge and skills necessary for continued career advancement. Combining core organizational leadership topics with practical strategies, the three-day program equips participants to address mission-critical responsibilities effectively. Through a mix of general sessions and self-selected small group breakouts, attendees tailor their experience to their specific goals, gaining the insights and tools needed to strengthen their leadership and confidently plan their career progression.
What to Expect
Formerly known as the Mid-Career Women Faculty Leadership Development Seminar, this expanded seminar is now the primary leadership development experience for all midcareer faculty. Faculty who were previously interested in either the Mid-Career Women Faculty Leadership Development Seminar or the Mid-Career Minority Faculty Leadership Development Seminar are encouraged to participate in this inclusive, cohort-based program.
The curriculum is highly focused on gaining leadership knowledge and skills that will enable you to better prepare for advancement and promotion. Over three days, you’ll take part in engaging plenaries and panels, interactive small group breakouts, and will have ample opportunity to network with peers facing similar challenges. Specific topics that will be covered during the seminar include:
- Persuasive communication
- Negotiation
- Enhancing your visibility
- Strategic career transitions and planning
- Funding the academic mission
- Finding and managing sponsorships
Who Should Attend?
Physicians and scientists with an appointment at an AAMC member school of medicine, with a minimum of two years of experience (from the date of the seminar) as an Associate Professor or a newly appointed Professor who never received formal leadership training. Beginning with their first medical school faculty appointment, applicants typically have a minimum of eight years’ experience. While this course is designed for Associate Professors, experienced and aspiring faculty are welcome to participate if the curriculum aligns with their leadership development goals.
Please note that the program now uses a registration-based enrollment process, making it easier to secure your spot while maintaining the same rigorous learning experience. This update is intended to allow participants to plan and confirm their participation with greater ease.
Program Objectives
At the completion of the seminar, participants will be able to:
- Apply critical knowledge from the seminar and create an actionable plan to achieve career goals.
- Acquire personal and organizational strategies for successful leadership in academic medicine and science.
- Expand their networks of mentors, sponsors, and colleagues to increase engagement with peers
