Skilled Documentation and Coding for Physical and Occupational Therapists

Course Description:

As healthcare reimbursement continues to evolve and become more complicated, it is more important than ever that therapists remain highly skilled in their ability to document a holistic view of the patient, their plan of care, progress, outcomes and bill appropriately.  This course will focus on reviewing CPT codes, documentation and how to document and bill appropriately for physical therapy and occupational therapy services.

Course Outline:

Overview of Medicare's "8-minute rule"

Overview of substantial portion billing

Definitions of common CPT codes used by PT/OT

Documentation requirements to support these procedures

- Focus on CPT codes for PT/OT 97110-97763 with additional attention to specialty CPT codes for compression bandaging, biofeedback, cognitive assessment and treatment, and canalith repositioning

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this course participants will be able to:

1. Explain Medicare’s “8-minute rule” and substantial portion billing methodologies
2. Use compliant documentation to support CPT codes 97110-97763
3. Use compliant documentation to support specialty CPT codes. 

Speaker Bio:

Suzanne Bowser earned her Masters degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Delaware in 1999 after which, she relocated to Portland, OR. During her early career, she worked as a generalist PT in both the outpatient and acute care hospital settings at a community hospital. Suzanne pursued leadership opportunities, becoming the director of rehab services at Willamette Falls Hospital in 2007, where she had oversight of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech language pathology services in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. It was there that Suzanne discovered her passion for billing, coding, regulatory and documentation compliance, and denial management as they relate to outpatient therapy services. Since 2013, Suzanne has been the manager of regional rehabilitation business operations and compliance at Providence Health & Services in Portland, Oregon with 8 hospitals and more than 30 outpatient clinics across the state.
