This course introduces K-12 educators to the foundations of AI literacy, with a focus on understanding how generative AI works, where it can help in teaching and learning, and where its limitations and risks require careful judgment. Educators will explore practical strategies for using, evaluating, and teaching about AI responsibly, with attention to ethics, bias, copyright, and classroom decision-making. Educators will come away with a plan for making thoughtful decisions about AI use, and tools and ideas for providing training and guidance to fellow educators.

As this is an asynchronous course, participants may work at their own pace. However, to facilitate discussion and keep on track, the following schedule is recommended.

Module 1, May 18-31: Understanding AI

Module 2, June 1-14: Responsible Use of AI

Module 3, June 15-28: Evaluating and Analyzing AI

Module 4, June 29 - July 12: The impact of AI on Learning

Module 5, July 13 - July 26: Prompt Engineering

Module 6, July 27 - Aug 9: Using AI in the Classroom

Course Syllabus

Methods of Instruction - The course will utilize a think, create, share, and grow structure. Activities will include common readings and videos (think), group discussions (share), structured activities (create), and reflective practices (grow).

Grade Level: K-12 classroom educators, librarians, and edtech coaches. You do not need to be actively working in the classroom to take this course.
