Event design isn't decoration; it's strategy. Every choice, from your save-the-date to your signage to where you put the bar, shapes how a guest feels, moves, and remembers your event. Thoughtful design turns an ordinary gathering into an immersive experience, and it's about a lot more than pretty tablescapes.
In this session, BBJ La Tavola's Avery Young and CORT Party Rental's Jana Heinrichs, two vendor partners from the MPI Washington Chapter, take you on a fast-paced trip through the decades of event design: from the Gilded Age's spectacle-for-the-host approach, through mid-century's rulebook era, past the beige-on-beige plateau of the 90s and 2000s, and into today's world where creativity and practicality finally get to be the same conversation.
Walk away with a real framework for thinking about design as strategy, how to use color and flow to guide guests without a single sign, and how to work with your vendors as true design partners instead of order-takers.
Learning Outcomes:
- Reframe event design as strategy, not just aesthetics. Attendees will be able to identify the difference between decorative choices and intentional design decisions and how each shapes guest experience.
- Apply design as wayfinding. Attendees will learn how color, flow, and layout guide guests through a space, even when they don't consciously notice it happening.
- Design for the full guest journey. Attendees will be able to identify design touchpoints across the entire attendee experience, from first communication through event close.
