Machine learning is truly in its infancy in geoscience. With major advances in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning, there is a growing consensus that the potential for impact in the geosciences is enormous. This was apparent at the previous Machine Learning in Solid Earth geoscience conference held in January of 2024 in Santa Fe. Since then, there has been a dramatic growth in interest amongst researchers and program managers across a wide range of geoscience research organizations. To continue the momentum, we will gather again in Santa Fe in January of 2025 to discuss the ongoing work at the intersection of machine learning and solid earth geoscience. The primary objective is to bring together geoscientists worldwide working on machine learning, to advance the field. A secondary objective is to provide information to DOE program managers on the state of the art. This meeting is meant in part to make participants aware of other related or ostensibly unrelated efforts to their work, and to introduce individuals with little or no machine learning background to existing efforts.
This Center for Nonlinear Studies conference will focus on applications of machine learning to subsurface geoscience problems, including earthquakes (both tectonic and induced); faulting; multimodal earth imaging; geological characterization; geochemistry; rare earth elements and critical minearls; weathering; subsurface flow and transport; etc.
