PALS Instructor Essentials Registration Information

 

The PALS Instructor Essentials (IE) Course is a 2-day, in-person course, with additional online pre-requisites to complete prior to attending in-person.

The PALS IE course is delivered by an Instructor Trainer or Master Instructor who will guide and develop instructor candidates in the key elements of facilitating Heart & Stroke Pediatric Advanced Life Support courses.

To become a Heart and Stroke Foundation Instructor, you need to follow and complete the steps #1 to #9 as outlined below. Of note, if you are already a Heart and Stroke Foundation Instructor in another discipline (BLS, ACLS, SFA, etc.) - certain steps may not apply. Please confirm you have met all pre-requisites before registering for the PALS IE course.

1. Have a current PALS provider completion card.

2. Complete and submit your instructor application and pay your $55 instructor application fee (done on the Heart and Stroke Training Portal).

3. Take Core Instructor Training (online) ($35). (Completed on the Heart and Stroke Training Portal under Online Courses)The Core Instructor Course is a foundation course required by all Heart and Stroke Foundation Instructor-Candidates. The course teaches Instructor-Candidates how to apply effective communication techniques, manage the classroom environment, and promote knowledge and skill transfer and retention.

4. Obtain your resources:

  • PALS Provider Manual
  • ECC Handbook
  • PALS Course Videos USB

5. Complete the PALS IE Online Module (this online content is in addition to the core instructor course).

6. Register for, attend, and successfully complete the PALS IE course. (Please ensure to register in two places: on this registration site and on the Heart & Stroke Portal).

7. Accept the relevant Instructor agreements through the Heart and Stroke training portal.

8. Successfully complete monitoring on a PALS course by a Heart & Stroke-approved experienced instructor, instructor trainer, or master instructor within six months of completing the PALS IE course.

9. Pay $75 annual instructor fee (pro-rated to activation date) to activate.

Prerequisites for the course include:

  • Proof of current Heart & Stroke BLS Provider completed within 12 months of starting the instructor course.
  • Proof of current PALS Provider completed within 24 months of starting the instructor course.
  • Proof of completion of the Core Instructor Training.
  • Proof of completion of the PALS IE online module.
  • All other required steps to obtain instructor status with HSF (review steps 1-9 previously listed) .
  • Proof of completion of your pre-requisites need to be showing on you Heart & Stroke account no later than 72 hours prior to the class.

The PALS Instructor Course covers a lot of material in a short time. Please open and review all the materials as listed above prior to the course.

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing. You will be practicing skills that require working on your hands and knees, bending, standing, and lifting.

Attendance Guidelines

  • Please arrive 5-10 minutes prior to start time.
  • Attendance for the full duration of both days is mandatory.
  • Due to the volume of material this session covers, we will not be able to accept late arrivals.
  • Late arrivals and those not participating for the full duration each day will be asked to reschedule at their own expense.
