This exhibition presents the work of Gareth Fuller, a British artist whose intricate maps offer a striking counterpoint to an age shaped by artificial intelligence, digital navigation, and automated image-making. At a time when places are increasingly experienced through screens with shrinking attention spans, Fuller provides a deeply human alternative: slow observation, physical movement, and the patient act of drawing by hand.
Over decades of walking through cities and landscapes around the world, Fuller has transformed his journeys into richly detailed visual narratives. His works—which blend documentary observation with personal reflection—reveal the hidden layers and hidden places like London, Beijing, Pyongyang, and Washington, D.C. More than maps, they are records of memory, history, and human connection.
We are surrounded by rapidly generated images and digitally mediated realities. Fuller's work reaffirms the value of curiosity, craftsmanship, and deep engagement with the world. This exhibition invites viewers to slow down, look closely, and rediscover the power of drawing as a way to understand the landscapes we inhabit.
This exhibition is curated by Jinyoung Anna Jin, Director of Asian Art and Culture at the Charles B. Wang Center.
