COURSE OVERVIEW

Mental health professionals are shining a light on the pervasiveness of anxiety, highlighting the need for increased awareness and attention to this issue. Young people are notably affected: anxiety affects 1 in 5 children, and 70% of teens say that anxiety is a major problem facing their age group. This course will give educational professionals the tools they need to support students who have anxiety, including foundational knowledge about anxiety, its symptoms, and a look at Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Participants will complete the course equipped with ready to implement strategies for teaching coping skills, ideas for accommodations, and considerations for tools and processes to support students who have anxiety.

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Reflect on assumptions and insights of practitioners, researchers and self, related to understanding and supporting students who have anxiety.
  • Apply the Cognitive Behavior Model (CBT) to real world situations to help students process behaviors related to anxiety.
  • Create a student-friendly menu of coping strategies for use in the classroom.
  • Choose and provide appropriate accommodation for assignments, presentations, testing, in-class work, and the overall classroom environment.
  • Develop a colleague-to-colleague communication process for identifying a student in need.
  • Assist students who have anxiety around academic performance with strategies to mitigate stress.

  • Extensions and re-enrollments are not permitted.
  • You may cancel within one week of registration.  A $100.00 cancellation fee will be applied.

Shelby Nutting-Veliz holds a Bachelor’s in Psychology and a Master’s in Social Work.  She is licensed as both an Independent Clinical Social Worker and a School Social Worker.  Shelby has worked as a School Social worker for more than ten years at the middle and high school levels.
