This  presentation will benefit practitioners and regulators who want an  understanding of how different techniques can work together to develop a  robust CSM or who wish to understand the practical endpoints to  remediation.

We will discuss a site that was initially assessed using standard techniques of groundwater,  soil and soil vapour analysis.  Whilst this enabled a general  understanding of the LNAPL CSM, further details and a higher resolution  of data was required to obtain a detailed knowledge of contaminant  distribution (laterally & vertically) to understand the risks posed  by the site, target remediation activities and plan for long term  sustainable management.  This data was obtained using a Laser  Induced Fluorescence (LIF) assessment.  The refined LNAPL CSM allowed  the existing remediation system to be repurposed to focus on the most  impacted areas of the site and also to plan a Natural Source Zone  Depletion (NZSD) assessment.  The targeted NSZD assessment was used as  part of a lines of evidence approach to show that further remediation  was not required.

Principal Environmental Geoscientist

Danny  is a Principal Environmental Geoscientist and Certified Environmental  Practitioner, Site Contamination Specialist (CEnvP SC), with 15 years’  experience in the field of environmental science.

Danny  has held a number of roles including client manager for a major  petroleum company, a role which saw him oversee approximately 60  projects involving assessment, risk assessment/management, remediation  and stakeholder relations. He has a special interest in incorporating  sustainable management practices and/or remediation into his projects.   This includes a project where soil washing was utilised to remove oil  from 40,000m3 of sand rather than offsite disposal, and the current  project, where a sustainability assessment lead to the completion of  active remediation.
