LUNCH & LEARN – Matters of the Heart: Connections and Relationships

You are invited to join SOCHE for a virtual lunch and learn entitled “Matters of the Heart: Connections and Relationships,” on Wednesday, March 11, beginning at 12 p.m. ET. The session will be presented by Dr. Dawayne Kirkman, Senior Vice President of Student Affairs at Clark State College. 

In Relationship Rich Education, authors Peter Felten and Leo Lambert share this: “Relationships are the beating heart of the undergraduate experience.” Students begin to thrive when they feel welcomed at a university -- they have a sense of belonging to the institution and felt connected within the school.

After working in higher education for 25 plus years, Dr. Kirkman has developed a mantra: “Love yourself, love others, and make meaningful connections and relationships!” It has been his desire to lead with that sentiment when interacting with students and fellow employees. 

He believes that love cures both those who give it and those who receive it. In this session, we will briefly explore the four types of love (storge, philia, eros, and agape), hear a personal story about forgiveness, and discuss the importance of connection and relationships. We also will cover the Art of Self-Love and Giving Love with a Support Network exercise. 

Those attending this session will learn to:

• Gain a better understanding of “relationship-rich education”
• Build an even stronger Student Affairs team
• Have fun—learning can be engaging and interactive
