Invitation from the President

NYSSMA: Music for Life
Dear NYSSMA Colleagues, Educators, and Friends,
It is my great honor to welcome you to the 90th Annual NYSSMA Winter Conference here in Rochester. Reaching this milestone is a powerful reminder of the enduring role music education plays in the lives of our students, our communities, and each of us as educators.
This year, I am proud to share my presidential theme, “Music for Life.” At its heart, this theme reflects what we all know to be true—music is not simply something we teach during the school day. It is something that shapes who we are, stays with us through every stage of life, and connects us in ways that words alone cannot.
For our students, music may begin with a simple song, a first rehearsal, or a moment of discovery. Over time, it becomes confidence, expression, belonging, and joy. Whether they continue in music professionally or carry it with them as lifelong participants and listeners, the experiences we provide have a lasting impact far beyond our classrooms.
For us as educators, “Music for Life” is also a reminder of why we do this work. It is found in the daily moments—the breakthroughs, the challenges, the shared successes—and in the relationships we build with our students and colleagues. This conference is an opportunity to celebrate that shared purpose, to learn from one another, and to continue growing together.
I encourage you to fully immerse yourself in all that the conference has to offer. Attend sessions, connect with colleagues, explore new ideas, and take time to reflect on your own journey in music education. Our time together is not only about professional development—it is about renewal, inspiration, and community.
We are especially excited to feature Voctave as our Friday evening concert performance! This dynamic 11-member a cappella ensemble, known for their intricate and captivating vocal arrangements, brings together a remarkable blend of musical backgrounds and artistry. Their ability to create powerful musical experiences using only the human voice is a true testament to the beauty and versatility of music, and a perfect reflection of our theme, Music for Life.
As we gather for this 90th conference, let us honor the rich history of NYSSMA while continuing to look ahead with purpose and vision. The work we do matters deeply. Together, we ensure that music remains a vital, meaningful, and lifelong part of our students’ lives.
Thank you for your dedication, your passion, and the difference you make each and every day.
Musically yours,
Kathy Perconti
President, NYSSMA
