Mission

  • India’s floating solar sector has been growing rapidly, driven primarily by increasing land acquisition and transmission unavailability concerns. Latest NISE data shows that the nation has the potential to install a massive 102 GW of floating solar capacity even if there is a 20 per cent surface-use cap on feasible reservoirs, thereby creating a significant market for solar power deployment. Realising the importance of floating solar for India’s energy transition, the government released the PM Surya Sarovar Yojana recently which targets 5,000 MW of floating solar with 10,000 MWh of storage by 2030-31.
  • Floating solar projects are mainly being deployed on large reservoirs of existing thermal and hydropower plants. Public sector power companies have taken a lead in tapping their existing water bodies to generate solar power and utilising synergies in terms of grid connectivity, permitting and development of other infrastructure.
  • Various auctions have been conducted in this space, helping push prices down over the years. Further, floating solar projects are now being integrated with energy storage to further improve the business case and generate greater synergies with a combination of different power sources.
  • Floating solar is expected to soon become cost-competitive with conventional solar projects, especially with the development of indigenous products and a foray of specialised industry players catering to the segment. With attractive market dynamics and a maturing technology, the scale and size of these projects have increased significantly across the country. The upcoming floating solar policy with dedicated incentives and grants will make the case stronger for these projects and help in further boosting the growth of this untapped floating solar sector.

Against this backdrop, the mission of this conference is to highlight the potential, growth trends, policy interventions, developers’ plans, technology trends, execution and O&M solutions, financing landscape and outlook for the evolving floating solar sector in India. The conference will bring together policymakers, regulators, solar power developers, utilities, technology providers, manufacturers, water authorities and industry experts to present their perspectives and to discuss the opportunities, challenges and solutions in advancing the country’s floating solar market.
