Trauma is just a word. It doesn’t have to be a life sentence. By building a culture of safety in schools, we can give students and educators living with trauma the resources and support they need to thrive. As educators, we cannot stop trauma from happening. We can, however, create a safe place for ourselves and our children to go, regardless of what might be impacting us. This culture of safety is critical in helping students and educators develop effective coping skills and resilience so we can manage the stress—the mess of life—in order to thrive.

Video Topics:

An overview of the neurobiology of stress – how the brain responds to stress and trauma, and strategies we can implement to mitigate the impact…while building resilience. This session would be informative and then dig into self-regulation strategies for adults (put on your mask before helping others) and for kids (because stress impacts kids, too).
A deep discussion about the elements and practices that foster resilience within a Culture of Safety. How do we build a safe, predictable, consistent, positive learning environment? What does that look like?
An exploration into the unmet needs that tend to drive students’ behaviors in school. How can we best meet our students’ needs proactively, so they don’t attempt to meet them in another (usually disruptive and unhelpful) way?
A practical investigation of the components of healthy, trauma-invested communication practices. How do we build bridges and connections with others, especially other adults, when the stakes are high and tempers are flaring? We’ll walk through the six steps of communication and spend a good deal of time with the art of “repair.”
