Course Description:

Do you want to dive deeply into the Science of Reading? In this course, "Scarborough's Reading Rope: Unraveling Word Recognition,” participants will delve into Scarborough's Reading Rope, a Science of Reading model essential for developing proficient readers. Emphasis will be placed on three critical components: phonemic awareness, decoding, and sight words, each playing a pivotal role in reading fluency and comprehension. The participants will leave this course ready to implement the Science of Reading in more depth. They will walk away having specific strategies to teach each of these components of the Word Recognition strands as Hollis Scarborough describes as she articulates how students become proficient readers.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Phonemic Awareness: Participants will learn to recognize and manipulate individual sounds in words, a foundational skill crucial for spelling and decoding unfamiliar words. Through interactive exercises and assessments, they will grasp the importance of phonemic awareness in establishing strong reading foundations. They will be ready to implement critical strategies to teach phonemic awareness.
  • Decoding: The course will equip learners with effective strategies to decode words by understanding sound-symbol relationships and applying phonics rules. Decoding strategies will be learned to enhance decoding proficiency and promote accurate reading. They will be ready to implement critical strategies to teach phonics explicitly and systematically.
