STEMventures: Path to Innovation is a workshop provided by the SimKIDS Simulation Program at The Hospital for Sick Children.

These limited workshops are provided to high schools as a field trip offering for their students in Grade 9/10 and 11/12.

Capacity
Up to 30 students plus mandatory adult/school supervisors at a ratio of 1 supervisor per 10 students.

Workshop Overview

STEMventures is an innovative educational initiative that immerses students in the dynamic world of healthcare simulation. Through engaging activities, hands-on learning, and interactive presentations, students gain insight into how STEM concepts learned in school apply to the real world. 

They will tour the Simulation Centre, learn about past and current innovations our team has been working on, explore the science behind vital signs and how healthcare professionals use STEM knowledge in their daily assessments. The program also includes a dynamic CPR session (not a certification), where students learn hands-only CPR and AED skills through a gamified approach. 

These experiences are designed to help students discover various educational paths leading to STEM careers, appreciate the importance of continuous learning, and develop critical thinking skills.

Learning Objectives

  1. Introduce various healthcare careers and guide students through educational and career paths in the healthcare sector. 
  2. Recall and describe fundamental vital sign assessment skills, understand the scientific principles behind vital signs, and investigate their application in healthcare. 
  3. Emphasize the importance of continuous learning in healthcare and STEM-related fields. 
  4. Summarize the innovations in the Simulation Centre and recall at least three different uses of 3D printing within the centre.

Important Information for Schools

  • Workshops run from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm and do not include transportation to and from the Simulation Centre.
  • The workshop cost includes lunch of assorted sandwiches, soda, and potato chips for 30 students and 4 supervisors as they will not have security access to leave and re-enter the Simulation Centre. A pizza lunch can also be arranged at your request. Please provide us allergy plans and inform us of dietary restrictions at least one-week prior to your offering.
  • School/adult supervisor ratio 1 adult to 10 students.
  • Schools are responsible for gaining and maintaining informed consent to participate from student guardians. 
  • Schools are responsible for ensuring all participants meet safety and infection control requirements.

Fees, Invoicing, and Registration

  • The workshop cost is $2,825, which includes lunch and accommodates up to 30 students and up to 4 adult supervisors. 
  • If it has not previously been coordinated, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will be emailed to your institution's signing authority through DocuSign. The signed MOU is due two (2) weeks after it has been sent. Failure to meet deadlines may result in losing your workshop slot.
  • When MOU is signed and returned, your registration will be approved and an invoice will be sent to your billing contact or processed through the credit card on file. 
  • Should the Institution cancel the Workshop thirty (30) days or more prior to the date of Workshop offering, the Institution can be refunded 70% of the Participation Fees, while 30% acts as a non-refundable deposit. Any cancellations occurring less than thirty (30) days before the workshop offering are not eligible for a refund.
