As demand for clean energy storage technologies grows, the engineering sector faces increasing pressure to identify sustainable alternatives to fossil-fuel-derived and critically scarce carbon materials. Agricultural by-products, including sorghum biomass, represent an abundant and renewable resource with significant potential for advanced energy storage applications.
In this presentation, Dr Rana Arslan Afzal will share research examining how lignocellulosic composition, plant morphology, and targeted chemical refinement influence the structural and electrochemical properties of biomass-derived hard carbons. Attendees will gain insight into how precursor selection and processing methods affect porosity, crystallinity, and energy storage performance.
The session will provide practical understanding of supercapacitor electrode optimisation, biomass valorisation pathways, and the role of sustainable materials engineering in supporting future clean energy systems and circular economy objectives.
Delivered as part of the Win your way trackside competition, this event features a 2026 Engineers Australia Ambassador. Selected for their ability to connect engineering with motorsport, Dr Rana Arslan Afzal is driving innovation in their field and working to inspire members and showcase the impact of engineering in motorsport.
