Ages 8-12
As October comes to a close, children explore the birds and wildlife that share our backyards and how their food needs change with the seasons. Using clay, students design and build a ceramic bird feeder inspired by forms and textures found in nature.
Along the way, they solve practical design challenges like keeping seed dry, allowing rainwater to drain, and creating a feeder that welcomes birds while discouraging larger visitors. Each child will take their finished feeder home to hang outside and observe the wildlife it attracts.
Week 1: Observe & Imagine
We’ll explore the birds and wildlife around the farm, look closely at seeds, feathers, nests, and natural forms, then sketch ideas for a ceramic bird feeder.
Week 2: Design & Build
Turn sketches into clay. Children will build their feeders while thinking about engineering challenges and aesthetics designs.
Week 3: Final Touches & Glazing
Add natural textures, color, and finishing details to our feeders.
Week 4: Beyond the Studio
We’ll reflect on what we observed, share our designs, and take our feeders home to become part of our own backyard ecosystems.
