ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Roger Thurow
Roger Thurow is a journalist and author who writes about the persistence of hunger and malnutrition in our world as well as global agriculture and food policy. He was a reporter at the Wall Street Journal for thirty years, including twenty years as a foreign correspondent based in Europe and Africa. In 2003, he and his colleague Scott Kilman wrote a series of stories on famine in Africa that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in International Reporting. Thurow is the author of five books, including his most recent, Abiding Hunger: An American Paradox, to be released in September. He has also been a senior fellow for global agriculture and food policy at the Chicago Council, as well as a scholar-in-residence at Auburn University’s Hunger Solutions Institute.
Catherine Bertini
Catherine Bertini is a distinguished fellow of global food and agriculture at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. She served for 10 years as executive director of the United Nations World Food Program, the world’s largest international humanitarian agency, and was named the 2003 World Food Prize laureate for her groundbreaking leadership there. She has also served as UN undersecretary-general for management and UN security coordinator, and as USDA assistant secretary for food and consumer services, where she oversaw domestic nutrition programs and the nation’s assistance program for single mothers. Bertini was also a senior fellow on the first agriculture team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and currently chairs the board of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition.
