Session Description

Charter school leaders carry a unique responsibility: protecting students and staff while navigating lean teams, board governance, family expectations, campus operations, authorizer relationships, and intense public scrutiny. In this CDW School Safety Summit 2.0 session, John McDonald, co-author of The Essential Five and architect of the post-Columbine tragedy safety and crisis management plan, will share a practical crisis leadership framework for the first five minutes, five hours, five days, and five weeks following a critical incident. These critical decisions can shape trust, recovery, and long-term resilience across a charter school community. Designed for charter school CEOs, executive directors, board members, school leaders, operations teams, safety coordinators, and community partners, this session will connect preparedness, communication, reunification, governance, mental health support, and long-term recovery into a clear, actionable approach. Attendees will leave with practical guidance for strengthening crisis plans, clarifying leadership roles, aligning board and campus decision-making, and building safer, more resilient charter school communities before, during, and after a crisis.
