The course will examine language acquisition and how it impacts the academic achievement of students learning English as a new language. Participants will explore research-based practices that develop the four domains of language: listening, speaking, reading and writing. They will have the opportunity to experience interactive strategies and practices of engaging with multimedia text that can be used to support literacy across the content areas for English language learners (ELLs).
Participants will create project-based tasks designed to meet the differentiated needs of ELLs. Culturally responsive pedagogical practices will be developed to foster understanding of equitable and inclusive learning experiences for all students. Furthermore, participants will learn to recognize and honor the idea that the progress of each student’s learning should be nurtured over time in an atmosphere that preserves student culture and identity while encouraging and supporting student efforts at creating meaning.
Participants are responsible for acquiring the following text: Gibbons, P., Scaffolding Language, Scaffolding Learning, 2nd Edition: Heinemann. All participants will be expected to complete a paper, midterm and final project.
This course provides 45 CTLE hours in language acquisition for ELLs. It can also be used to fulfill 3 A+/P credits towards the +30 salary differential.
IMPORTANT: If you are interested in pursuing the salary differential, you will need to register through ASPDP when their catalog opens in September for an additional fee of $125. Teachers also have the option of registering to access 3 graduate level credit recommendations through the National College Recommendation Service (NCCRS) which can be used to fulfill 3 semester hours of the Methods of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages requirement for ESOL certification in New York State. For this option, there is an additional course fee of $200. Please note that you do not have to purchase this option to use the course toward your salary differential.
