Genesis Mission University/Science Philanthropy Summit

Overview

The purpose of the Genesis Mission University/Science Philanthropy Summit is to engage senior leaders across the US academic research enterprise to shape our shared vision, strategy, and approach to early Genesis Mission collaboration and partnerships.  

Quoting the EO, the Genesis Mission challenges DOE and the US research community “to harness the revolution underway in computing to dramatically accelerate scientific discovery, strengthen national security, secure energy dominance, enhance workforce productivity, and multiple the return on taxpayer investment into research and development.”  This call to action encompasses innovating our research practices, multi-institutional partnerships, integrated data and computing platforms, and workforce development approaches for the betterment of the Nation.

This one-day, invitation-only event will bring participants together with DOE senior leaders in active dialogue.  Participants will discuss opportunities and perceived barriers for universities and science philanthropy to engage the Genesis Mission in its first year and will chart forward-looking paths for strategic planning and community engagement.

With the Genesis Mission focus on partnerships to advance the use of AI in science and radical acceleration of scientific productivity across the US research enterprise, each participant will be called upon to engage in-depth breakout sessions in two of the following five areas:

1. Genesis Mission institutional partnership innovation: Explore and gather institutional strategies for partnership models to enable research spanning universities, philanthropic organizations, government agencies, and private sector technology firms to advance AI in science.
2. Genesis Mission research Lighthouse Challenges: Explore how universities and science philanthropy see themselves collaborating and what new ideas/approaches/resources they can bring to the first Lighthouse Challenges in science, national security, and energy missions; gather insights into how institutions identify the most compelling challenges.
3. Genesis Mission computing and data ecosystem: Explore a framework to integrate DOE and university research ecosystems, spanning computing, data, AI models, and experimental and production tools, through institutional-level agreements backed by trust-based relationships, seeded by DOE’s Genesis Mission Trusted Research Environments concept.
4. Genesis Mission workforce development and engagement: Assess avenues for rapid collaboration on fellowships, internships, apprenticeships, and other workforce development and early career engagement approaches, emphasizing growing the American workforce.
5. Genesis Mission research productivity: Gather perspectives on Genesis Mission value propositions, including metrics of AI-advantage, evaluating productivity in science, career promotion, and incentivizing institution- and individual-level research methods risk-taking.

The planned agenda includes overviews of the Administration’s Genesis Mission vision and strategy and of DOE’s efforts to establish the American Science and Security Platform to pursue the initial Genesis Mission Lighthouse Problems, including the role of the national laboratories.  The Summit will conclude with a plenary session to summarize the key insights and calls to action from the discussions.

The registration fee for In-Person attendance is $50.
