This training is now scheduled for virtual only.

This capstone training addresses four specialized topics frequently requested by DBT clinicians: contingency management, fidelity measurement, substance use disorder treatment, and integrated exposure work. Each segment offers focused, practical guidance for clinicians seeking to deepen their command of specialized DBT applications.

Topics include:

  • Missouri's revised DBT fidelity measure — an overview of the instrument, its structure and scoring, and practical guidance for using it to evaluate and strengthen adherence within a comprehensive DBT program. For providers new to DBT, this will give an overview of the treatment.
  • Contingency management in DBT — how CM principles and reinforcement-based strategies can be used more effectively to optimize the benefits of the treatment overall.
  • DBT for Substance Use Disorders (DBT-SUD) — this brief overview will discuss core adaptations to the standard model, including dialectical abstinence, attachment strategies, and harm-reduction principles for treating co-occurring SUD, and the skills used to address a primary target of substance abuse.
  • DBT-Prolonged Exposure (DBT-PE) — this segment will introduce DBT providers to the integrated protocol for treating PTSD within a comprehensive DBT frame, including readiness criteria, sequencing exposure work within the target hierarchy, and coordinating PE with ongoing DBT treatment.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify effective contingency management strategies within a standard DBT framework and describe how reinforcement-based strategies can optimize treatment outcomes.
  2. Describe the structure and scoring of Missouri's revised DBT fidelity measure and apply it to evaluate adherence within a comprehensive DBT program.
  3. Summarize the core adaptations DBT-SUD makes to the standard model, including dialectical abstinence, attachment strategies, and harm-reduction principles, and identify the skills used to target substance use behaviors.
  4. Explain the readiness criteria and sequencing considerations for integrating Prolonged Exposure into ongoing DBT treatment, within the context of the target hierarchy.
  5. Differentiate clearly between formal and informal applications of exposure.
