COURSE DESCRIPTION
In this immersive, advanced workshop, participants will explore how expert debriefers think, reflect, and adapt in complex learning situations. Through interactive discussion, guided reflection, and practice with challenging debriefing scenarios, participants will examine how learner cognition, identity, emotions, and prior experiences, as well as their own assumptions and implicit biases, shape the debriefing process. Participants will practice intentional, learner-centered strategies for navigating difficult feedback, maintaining psychological safety, fostering meaningful reflection, and adapting their approach in the moment.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Develop a shared mental model of expert debriefing as an adaptive, learner-centered process.
- Recognize how their own assumptions, attention, emotions, and implicit biases influence debriefing conversations.
- Apply strategies that foster reflection, psychological safety, perspective-taking, and meaningful learning.
- Navigate challenging debriefing situations, including those involving identity, bias, and difficult feedback, with curiosity, adaptability, and intentionality.
- Create a personal action plan to strengthen their debriefing practice through ongoing self-reflection and feedback.
