Prof Anita Afzali, MD, MPH, MHCM, AGAF, FACG is the James F. Heady Endowed Chair and Professor of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati, where she serves as Interim Chair of Internal Medicine and Physician Operations Executive at UC Health. An internationally recognised gastroenterologist specialising in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), she previously founded and led the first standalone multidisciplinary IBD Centre at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

A respected physician-executive, researcher, and global leader in gastroenterology, Prof Afzali has authored more than 300 academic publications and led over 20 clinical trials in IBD. Her work focuses on improving patient outcomes, advancing equitable access to care, and transforming healthcare delivery. She currently serves as Secretary General of the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO) and is the recipient of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s Legacy Award for her outstanding contributions to IBD care, research, and education.
