The Fatherhood Project will train participants in our program, Fathers in Recovery, (FIR) that is aimed at relapse prevention for men recovering from Opioid and Alcohol Use Disorders by teaching the leading skills in effective parenting to enable fathers to be increasingly emotionally engaged with their children. The day and a half workshop will use live demonstration of a functioning group over several sessions, question and answer periods, videos of fathers and children and brief teaching of leading parenting concepts by a Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Levy.

Group process is critical in learning to be leaders of this program. We emphasize the active participation of group members in discussing their parenting experience, both successes and limitations. Live demonstrations of leadership technique will be emphasized.

  2. Discover group leadership techniques and skills.
  3. Recognize the specific skills involved in encouraging active group participation.
  4. Idenitfy preferred responses to group members who become emotional while discussing their parenting successes and limitations.
  5. Spot how to create group cohesion and trust leading to self-disclosure in the live group.
