PROGRAM OVERVIEW

CIRCLES is an in-person, comprehensive workshop that provides simulation-based training and education related to the neonatal circumcision procedure. This workshop involves multiple phases of training and evaluation that will facilitate skills development for novice or intermediate providers of neonatal circumcision.  

This full-day workshop (9:00 am - 3:45 pm) is being offered in-person twice per year.

Course materials will be provided on site and pre-requisite online learning will be emailed to registrants two-weeks in advance of their workshop.

CIRCLES follows the International Network for Simulation-based Paediatric Innovation, Research, and Education (INSPIRE) Procedure Training Framework. The main goal of the INSPIRE framework is to improve clinical success rates and outcomes of paediatric procedures.

IN-PERSON AGENDA

0900-0915: Intro and Pre-brief

0915-1045: Expert modelling
(45 minutes Gomco demonstration, 45 minute Mogen demonstration)

1045-1100: Break

1100-1230: Deliberate Practice with Coaching

1230-1330: Lunch

1330-1530: One-to-one Evaluations on clamp of choice

1530-1545: Closing

    Understand and apply evidence-based guidelines to support optimal healing and minimize complications.
  • Recognize and Respond to Adverse Events Build confidence in identifying, managing, and communicating about potential complications to ensure patient safety.
  • Advance Your Practice—and Your Credentials
    Earn Section 3 credits from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This accredited workshop supports your professional development while enhancing patient care.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this workshop, the learner will be able to: 

• Describe the key aspects of the neonatal circumcision procedure

• Diagnose for suitability and unsuitability for neonatal circumcision

• Identify the prerequisites of effective informed consent 

• Perform regional penile nerve block in neonates 

• Demonstrate GOMCO (Yellen-Style) and Mogen (Bronstein-Style) methods of neonatal circumcision 

• Identify and integrate postoperative care guidelines following neonatal circumcision 

• Identify and manage adverse events resulting from neonatal circumcision 

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Novice or intermediate providers of neonatal circumcision (e.g. residents, fellows, family physicians, pediatricians, general surgeons, nurse practitioners, etc.)

ACCREDITATION (CME) INFORMATION

This activity is an accredited simulation activity (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and approved by the SickKids Simulation Program. This course qualifies for a maximum of 5.75 hours (credits are automatically calculated).

OPTIONAL CLINICAL OBSERVATION

There is an optional continued learning experience for learners who have successfully completed the in-person CIRCLES Workshop.

This optional experience is offered for learners to have an opportunity to observe a neonatal circumcision procedure (some conditions apply).

Due to the clinical nature of this optional continued learning experience, it will not be offered immediately after day 1 of CIRCLES. Dates and times of observations are subject to change based on circumcision bookings.
