Chronic pain, substance use disorder, and mental health conditions frequently coexist, creating complex clinical challenges for family physicians. This session will explore common psychiatric diagnoses that occur alongside chronic pain and substance use disorder, review the clinical risks associated with these overlapping conditions, and discuss practical strategies for assessment and management in the primary care setting. Attendees will gain a realistic, patient-centered approach to navigating these difficult encounters and learn how to safely incorporate pharmacologic treatment options into comprehensive care plans.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify common psychiatric diagnoses that occur comorbidly in those in chronic pain with substance use disorder.
  • Identify and manage the clinical risks associated with dual diagnosis in patients with chronic pain.
  • Develop a realistic "in the room" clinical approach for patients with chronic pain and dual diagnosis.
  • Understand how to safely apply pharmacologic options in this context.
