About the speakers

Kim McCabe,
ALS
Kim McCabe – ALS: Originally from South Africa, Kim has a BSc in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Natal and has had a career spanning both continents and industry sectors. Starting out in the materials testing sector, providing pavement and construction material testing services for Natal Roads Dept and subsequently moving onto the food sector where he provided laboratory management and optimisation services as well as highly focused QA and QC support for the South African Sugar Association. In 1996 following his move to Australia, Kim joined ALS, where he has been employed for the past 24 years. Currently Kim is a Senior Inorganic Chemist in ALS Brisbane’s flagship laboratory and along with all of the usual responsibilities of a senior analyst, Kim is also the foremost technical expert in Acid Sulphate Soils, which he will be discussing with us during this event.

Regional Technical Manager,
Eurofins
Bob Symons - Eurofins: Bob is the Regional Technical Manager for Eurofins Environment Testing in Australia & New Zealand as is based in their Sydney laboratory. Bob has a PhD in analytical chemistry from La Trobe University and has been working in the area of environmental organic chemistry for over 35 years employed by Australian, State and New Zealand government laboratories as well as multi-national industrial companies. Bob’s interests over the past 20 years have been the analysis of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as dioxins, PCBs, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) & other brominated flame retardants, per- and polyfluoro alkyl substances (PFAS) and more recently pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) using advanced mass spectrometric techniques. Bob is leading Eurofins establishment of an emerging contaminants laboratory specialising in the determination of “unknown unknowns” as well as the first commercial facility in Australia analysing microplastics.
