Overview: This training prepares medical professionals to recognize and respond to suspected child abuse, neglect, and prenatal substance exposure, while also building a practical understanding of what happens after a report is made. Through expert-led teaching and case-based discussion, participants will review clinical indicators, Arizona mandatory reporting requirements, documentation considerations, reporting thresholds, and case-based decision-making.

The session will also help medical professionals understand how Department of Child Safety investigations, Juvenile Court proceedings, placement decisions, safety planning, reunification services, Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers, and other child welfare partners may shape ongoing care, communication, documentation, and collaboration for children and families involved in the dependency system.

Learning Objectives:
By the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Recognize clinical findings that may raise concern for child abuse, neglect, or prenatal substance exposure.
2. Apply clinical reasoning to distinguish findings that may warrant further evaluation or reporting for suspected maltreatment.
3. Apply Arizona mandatory reporting requirements when abuse or neglect is reasonably suspected.
4. Describe the roles of DCS, the Juvenile Court in a dependency case, CASA volunteers, and other child welfare partners following a report of suspected maltreatment.
5. Identify strategies for effective collaboration with child welfare partners when caring for children and families involved in the dependency system.
