Summary
The Denburg and Pechlivanoglou Labs, in collaboration with Child Health Evaluative Sciences at SickKids, are offering a one-day workshop on Discrete Choice Experiments (DCE) on September 2, 2026. A DCE is a method for eliciting preferences by asking participants to choose between hypothetical alternatives, each defined by a finite combination of attributes describing a product, service, or strategy. DCEs are commonly used in health economics, health technology assessment, and patient-centred outcomes research. In paediatrics, DCEs have been used in a variety of contexts, including to evaluate parent and caregiver preferences for childhood vaccination programs, treatment options for chronic pediatric conditions, and models of healthcare delivery.
Health economists, health technology assessment practitioners, biostatisticians, clinical and health services researchers and graduate students interested in exploring this specialized technique are welcome to participate.
The course instructor will be Dr. Samantha Pollard, a health services researcher specializing in applied health economics methods, from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. The course will introduce core concepts in designing, implementing, and analysing DCEs in health research. Participants will have an opportunity for hands-on analysis using R.

Participant preparation
Participants are expected to bring a laptop with R installed.
Self-paced learning modules for R will be provided as part of the workshop registration.
