Orton-Gillingham Academy

The Beginning

We are continuing to celebrate 30 years of service!

Planning for the Orton-Gillingham Academy began in 1991 in response to discussions led by the Orton Dyslexia Society (now the International Dyslexia Association). A dedicated group of distinguished Orton-Gillingham educators from across the United States came together to better serve individuals with dyslexia, fellow professionals, and the public. The Academy formally began operations in 1995 and is governed by a Board of Trustees elected from its Fellows, with committees of Trustees and members carrying out its work.

Today, the Academy has more than 4,000 members from around the world who have met its rigorous standards.

What does the Academy do?

Founded to establish and uphold professional and ethical standards for the Orton-Gillingham Approach, OGA certifies practitioners, accredits instructional and training programs, and promotes public awareness of dyslexia and effective intervention. OGA is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.

Remarkably, every Academy member can trace their professional lineage back to either Dr. Orton or Anna Gillingham through their training Fellow.

The mission of the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA) is to uphold and sustain the foundational principles of the Orton-Gillingham Approach as established by Dr. Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham. In support of this mission, the OGA is exclusively charged to:

  • Establish and maintain professional and ethical standards for practitioners and educators of the Orton-Gillingham Approach for the treatment of dyslexia.
  • Certify individuals who meet Academy standards by demonstrating competence as practitioners and educators of the Orton-Gillingham Approach.
  • Accredit training programs that meet Academy standards to train Orton-Gillingham practitioners and educators.
  • Accredit instructional programs that meet Academy standards in schools, clinics, and summer programs.
  • Sponsor and disseminate research relevant to Orton-Gillingham instruction.
  • Broaden public awareness of the nature and educational needs of people with dyslexia and the role of the Orton-Gillingham Approach for the treatment of dyslexia.
