Who Should Attend?

This training is open to all employees across the University of Rochester, University of Rochester Medicine, and all affiliated organizations. No matter your role or department -whether you work in clinical care, research, teaching, dining services, facilities, information technology, academic affairs, public safety, environmental services, or any other area -these skills will help you navigate high-stakes conversations and build stronger working relationships. From staff to faculty to senior leaders, everyone benefits from learning how to communicate with candor and respect.

What You'll Learn

You'll develop vital skills that will equip you to speak with complete candor (no matter the topic) and with complete respect (no matter the person or their position). These skills can drive dramatic improvements across the organization – team performance and outcomes, workplace culture, patient safety & quality care, and student engagement and success - by helping you to:

• Hold the right conversations

• Avoid repeatedly having the same conversation

• Understand your own style under stress

• Recognize and diffuse violence and silence

• Clearly identify and express what you really mean

• Separate facts from stories and emotions

• Make it safe for others to speak up

• Make clear decisions and commitments

 

How is a “Focused” course different than the two-day course?

The Focused version is a subset of the skills taught in a traditional two-day course. Participants learn skills to create alignment and agreement by fostering open dialogue around high-stakes, emotional, or risky topics at all levels of the organization. The FOCUSED format provides greater flexibility to meet the demanding schedules and time constraints of busy teams and departments.

Continuing Education Credit

This course is valuable for all employees, regardless of their eligibility for continuing education. For employees seeking continuing education credit, the following credits are available for eligible participants in the following categories:

The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

CNE Accreditation/Certification

The University of Rochester Center for Nursing Professional Development is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. 7.5 ANCC Continuing Nursing Education contact hours provided.

Social Work Accreditation/Certification

University of Rochester Medical Center, Center for Experiential Learning is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW0005. This activity is approved for 7.5 Social Work continuing education hour(s).
