Description

This training is brought to you by the Department of Mental Health and focuses on supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) through identifying and managing sexual behaviors and applying trauma-informed care principles.

Healthy sexual behavior is a normal part of life for individuals with I/DD. However, problematic sexual behaviors can create significant challenges and may disrupt placements when there is a risk of harm to the individual or others. In the Management of Sexual Behaviors portion of this training, Dr. Stanislaus will address the 3 categories of problematic sexual behaviors identified in the IDD population: Inappropriate Sexual Behaviors, Hypersexual Behaviors, and Deviant Sexual Behaviors. She will discuss how to differentiate them and the management strategies for each category, as well as strategies to support healthy sexual behaviors.  

The training also emphasizes the importance of a trauma-informed approach when supporting individuals with I/DD and co-occurring behavioral health symptoms. In the Trauma Informed Care portion of the training, Rachel Jones will address how to recognize trauma reminders, appropriate assessments, describe the use of co-regulation to de-escalate, and apply trauma-informed medication considerations.

Learning Objectives

• Differentiate between inappropriate sexual behaviors, hypersexual behaviors, and deviant sexual behaviors in individuals with I/DD and behavioral health needs.
• Identify and apply trauma-informed strategies to recognize trauma reminders, support co-regulation, and de-escalate behaviors associated with trauma.
• Describe appropriate management and support strategies that address sexual behaviors, promote healthy sexuality, and incorporate trauma-informed assessment and medication considerations.

Lunch

Lunch will be provided at this event. Missouri Behavioral Health Council cannot guarantee the lunch provided will accommodate various dietary restrictions, though we will try to accommodate the best we can. MBHC does have a kitchen onsite with a refrigerator, sink, and microwave. Attendees are welcome to bring meals and use this space for meal preparation.

Speakers

The Missouri Behavioral Health Council will award continuing education to behavioral health professionals who log in for the full session.

New Requirement for Continuing Education Credits (Effective July 1, 2025):

To receive CE credits for virtual training or meetings, participants must keep their cameras on for the duration of the training, except during scheduled breaks.

 We understand that technical issues can arise. If your camera is not working, please notify the trainer in advance and remain fully engaged throughout the session. Active participation is required in order to be eligible for continuing education credit.

1. All attendees must be registered and logged in individually to the virtual event.

2. Please log in 5-10 minutes prior to the start time in order to work out any potential technical difficulties before the event begins.

If an attendee is not listed on the generated attendance report for the full time, continuing education cannot be awarded. MBHC retains the attendance report for auditing purposes.
