Real World Application of Data Analytics and AI in Internal Audit

The City of Edmonton's Office of the City Auditor has evolved its audit function by integrating data analytics, automation, and artificial intelligence into traditional audits and continuous auditing activities. This presentation will provide a practical overview of the office and its data science strategy, including examples of how data analytics and AI have been used in past audit projects. The presenters will discuss analytics-specific audits, including three examples of data analytics audits and the use of data and AI in continuous auditing projects. They will also share practical applications of AI tools used to improve audit team workflows and efficiency. The session will conclude with examples of how data and automation have improved public reporting on recommendation follow-up and hotline reporting, giving attendees practical insights into the real-world application of analytics and AI within internal audit.
