Elvira Fortunato, Full professor and Former Vice Rector of NOVA University of Lisbon reflects on the journey “from the laboratory bench to political responsibility,” exploring how scientific experience can shape effective public policy. Drawing on personal insights and recent European developments, it examines Portugal’s scientific progress since democracy, the expansion of doctoral education, and the challenge of researcher precarity. The talk highlights national programs linking academia and industry, fostering stable research careers, and aligning Portugal’s science policies with European strategies to enhance innovation, productivity, and technological sovereignty.

This Pure session explores how open APIs, particularly OpenAlex and ROR, can help clean up issues and extend what Pure can do. Through lightweight, modular scripts and emerging use cases, I’ll demonstrate how these external data sources can enrich funder information, identify missing content, identify potential related content, link external organizations to persistent identifiers, and uncover/merge duplicates. The focus is on scalable, low-friction solutions that are (relatively) easy to adapt and build upon.

In this Pure session, small specialist institutions in the creative and performing arts use Pure to pursue common strategic research goals, from innovating and archiving to engaging audiences and supporting new artists – as well as staying compliant with funders. They also encounter similar challenges when implementing Pure, in a broader environment that is largely shaped by the needs of large, multi-faculty institutions. Pure can be effectively tailored for practice-based research and outputs in the creative and performing arts – but with so many configurations to consider, where should Administrators start?

In this Digital Commons session, managing music collections within Open Access repositories presents unique and multifaceted challenges that stem from the complex intersection of musical content characteristics, evolving legal frameworks, and sophisticated technical requirements. Unlike textual materials, musical works encompass multiple layers of intellectual property including compositions, arrangements, performances, and sound recordings, each potentially governed by distinct copyright holders and licensing agreements. These complexities significantly complicate securing necessary permissions and navigating copyright clearances, creating substantial barriers to open access initiatives for digital music collections.
