Building the Foundations of a CPL Program

This workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), guiding participants from foundational concepts and student impact to the collaborative creation of a customized institutional action plan for successful implementation.

    Learning Outcomes

    • Describe the various forms of CPL and utilize the steps, tools and procedures in the CPL process;
    • Illustrate and apply the CAEL principles of best practice in CPL;
    • Articulate the roles and responsibilities of those involved in the CPL process;
    • Determine decision points for effective CPL implementation;
    • Identify strategies for gaining buy-in from faculty, administrators, & students;
    • Distinguish options for CPL-related organizational structures and action plans.

    Target Audience

    • CPL Owners: Coordinators, administrators, and degree planners building or refining a program.
    • CPL Supporters: Registrars, faculty, and administrative heads whose buy-in is essential for success.
    • Institutional Cohorts: We strongly recommend attending as a cross-functional team, as successful CPL implementation requires a unified, campus-wide effort.

    Note: This introductory session is designed for those new to CPL; it may be redundant for seasoned practitioners.

    Delivery & Certificate of Completion

    • This course is instructor-led, asynchronous, and offered online. 
    • Participant engagement is approximately 90-120 minutes per week.
    • To successfully complete this course and earn a certificate of completion, students must miss no more than 2 assignments.
    • All assignments must be submitted within two weeks of the course end date to count towards your certificate of completion.
    • Certificates of completion are emailed to successful students approximately three weeks after the final day of class.
