Course Overview and Instructions
This intensive interprofessional workshop introduces healthcare professionals to the foundations of simulation-based education. Through online pre-learning, hands-on practice, and facilitated activities, participants will develop skills in scenario design, simulation facilitation, prebriefing, and evidence-informed debriefing.
Registration includes both in-person workshop days. Attendance on both days is required.
Target audience:
Novice or intermediate developers of simulation based education.
Required Preparation:
Before attending the workshop, participants must:
· Complete the Needs Assessment
· Complete all five online pre-learning modules
· Develop and submit a simulation scenario for facilitator feedback
· Revise the scenario based on the feedback received
· Bring the revised scenario to the workshop for further discussion and guidance
Completing these requirements, by the stated deadlines, ensures that participants arrive ready to engage, learn with others, and receive meaningful guidance from facilitators.
Required Pre-Learning Modules:
1. Introduction to Simulation-Based Education
2. Prebriefing
3. Scenario Development
4. Debriefing, Part 1
5. Debriefing, Part 2
The pre-learning modules and scenario development may take up to six hours in total.
Learner Timeline:
- Receive workshop instructions, the Needs Assessment, and links to the required pre-learning modules (4 weeks prior to workshop).
- Complete the Needs Assessment (3 weeks prior to workshop).
- Develop and submit a simulation scenario for facilitator feedback (2 weeks prior to workshop).
- Complete all five online pre-learning modules (1 week prior to workshop).
- Revise the scenario based on the feedback received (1 week prior to workshop).
- Bring the revised scenario to the workshop for further discussion and guidance.
- Attendance on both days is required.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
· Describe the principles of simulation-based learning
· Explain the role and responsibilities of a simulation instructor
· Identify the planning processes and resources required for effective simulations
· Develop simulation scenarios aligned with learning objectives
· Facilitate simulation activities using simulation education best practices
· Apply evidence-informed debriefing approaches to support learner reflection and performance improvement.
Additional Information
· Enrollment is limited.
· This activity is an Accredited Simulation Activity, Section 3, as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and approved by the SickKids Simulation Program. Participants may claim a maximum of 15 hours.
