The SimZone is a state-of-the-art training facility that provides visitors with hands-on property loss prevention training and critical-thinking skills to identify and manage risk by experiencing real-world scenarios firsthand. This unique learning environment features 14 different simulated learning labs devoted to educating students about common risks such as fire, ignitable liquid, natural hazards, equipment malfunction and electrical breakdown. City of risk
A hands on learning environment that simulates several common occupancies and showcases real-world hazards and mitigations strategies. Explore detailed models, observe risk scenarios, and gain practical experience in a controlled setting.
Special hazards
This lab covers ignitable liquid operations and storage, as well as combustible dust. You’ll learn about the process hazards that may occur and the types of protection needed for each storage arrangement. The dust lab features material samples and protective equipment that can be installed to minimize damage from a dust explosion.
Equipment hazards
This lab covers both electrical systems and boilers. The electrical lab provides an introduction to medium- and low-voltage electrical equipment commonly found in commercial and industrial facilities, while the boiler lab examines the potential hazards associated with different types of industrial heating equipment.
Construction and natural hazards
A variety of roofing and wall construction samples help identify appropriate construction components as well as those that increase combustibility.
Risers and warehouse deficiencies
Operational riser configurations in this lab offer a wide selection of wet, dry, deluge, and pre-action systems featuring different manufacturers’ equipment and operating concepts. Rack storage of materials can present a serious fire challenge, and the training warehouse provides a realistic environment to illustrate the hazards and fire protection challenges associated with warehousing a wide range of materials.
Sprinklers, valves and fire pumps
This environment demonstrates various sprinkler discharge characteristics and supports all aspects of waterflow testing. Sixteen individually controlled open sprinkler heads illustrate differences in flow rates.
