The purpose of the online Sustainable Tourism for Native Nations and Communities Certificate (STC) is to provide participants with an overview of sustainable tourism and how it can be incorporated into their community’s tourism planning and development. The certificate will provide sustainable tourism curriculum with a specific emphasis on American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian tourism efforts offered as a professional development.

The certificate is offered through the Arizona State University Center for Sustainable Tourism housed in the School of Community Resources and Development. The Center for Sustainable Tourism and its affiliated partners, faculty, and students seek to examine the role and contribution of tourism in the social, cultural, environmental, and economic well-being of communities. The Center’s research, education, and development activities focus on long-term, system-wide, sustainable strategies, and co-created solutions for community and tourism development.

Technology & Registration Requirements

This is an online program, so participants should be comfortable with basic computer and internet functions. You do not need advanced technology skills or prior experience with online courses. However, you should be comfortable using a computer to access a website, open links, read online materials, watch videos, download or upload documents, complete assignments, and communicate by email.

After you register, you will receive additional instructions from Arizona State University (ASU) with information about accessing the course and setting up your student account. Please watch for these emails, including in your spam or junk folder.

Important: You will need reliable access to the email address you provide during registration. You will receive an email from ASU with instructions and a link to access your ASU account/portal. Please follow those instructions promptly and keep your login information in a safe place so you can easily access the course throughout the program.

If your work email is not accessible to you outside of work hours, or you are unable to complete coursework from your work email account, we strongly recommend registering with a personal email address that you regularly check. You will need access to your email for course communications, login information, and homework or other coursework completed outside of your regular work hours.

Before beginning the program, please make sure you have:

  • A reliable computer or laptop with internet access
  • Regular access to the email address used during registration
  • The ability to access online course materials, videos, readings, and assignments
  • A way to securely keep track of your ASU login information and password
  • Time available each week to complete approximately 5–6 hours of coursework, including online content, readings, case studies, and assignments

You do not need to be an expert in technology. If you can comfortably navigate the internet, use email, open and save files, and follow online instructions, you should have the basic technology skills needed to participate successfully.
