When people think about poverty, they often focus on what a community lacks.  Opportunity International takes a different approach.

In Nicaragua, we began by looking at what a community already has: talented people, strong relationships, local leadership, natural resources, entrepreneurial spirit, and a vision for a better future. We believe lasting change happens when communities build on these existing strengths and lead the development process themselves.

That philosophy, often called asset-based community development, shapes everything you will experience on this trip.

Rather than arriving with predetermined solutions, Opportunity listens first. We partner with local leaders to understand their goals, identify opportunities, and work alongside them to remove barriers that stand in the way of progress. The result is locally driven solutions that create sustainable pathways out of poverty.

Over time, this approach has helped create a connected ecosystem of opportunity across Nicaragua. Farmers gain access to new markets. Entrepreneurs build and grow businesses. Young people receive practical education that prepares them for local economic opportunities through programs like the Emprendedora Technical School. Community leaders work together to strengthen infrastructure, improve services, and invest in their future. Each part of the ecosystem supports the others, creating pathways for long-term growth and resilience.

You'll also see how this model extends to the tourism industry. Nicaragua's natural beauty is an important economic asset, creating jobs and opportunities for local families. Pacaya Lodge & Spa, where we will stay, reflects this same vision. The lodge was developed as a hands-on learning environment where young Nicaraguans could gain experience and develop the skills needed to succeed in the country's growing hospitality and tourism sector.
