Course Overview

This course is a basic overview of pumps and pumping theory, designed to review basic pump designs/classifications and many of their applications. The properties of fluids and the influence of pump choice and performance will also be covered. This class is designed as an introduction to topics such as: • Flow and pressure • Viscosity • Pump construction • Cavitation • NPSH • Pump performance curves This course qualifies for CEUs for individuals with a registered professional license in Texas.

Learning Objectives 

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the fundamental physical properties of fluids and their relationship to pressure, flow, and cavitation in pumping systems.
  • Identify the basic components and construction features of pumps, with an emphasis on centrifugal pump design and operation.
  • Interpret pump performance curves and Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) data to evaluate pump operating conditions and performance characteristics.
  • Apply pump affinity laws and fundamental pump principles to predict the effects of changes in speed, flow, head, and power requirements on pump performance.
