Cleantech Council delegates meet monthly to discover startups and innovation across clean, green, and sustainable technologies and build community with colleagues from like-minded corporations committed to paving the road to a sustainable future through partnership. This month, we open our meeting to the public, as we look at the innovation in fixing Carbon Markets.
Business and technology innovation in Carbon Markets is heating up as more and more companies set ESG goals that include reducing carbon emissions and other negative climate impacts. At a government level, 40 countries have some form of carbon pricing. All of this creates market-based incentives to address climate change, where stakeholders begin to incorporate the external costs of CO2 pollution that formerly could be ignored. But all is not well in Carbon Markets – Some Carbon Offset Credits are not delivering the long-term CO2 removal that they are citing on paper. This is a massive problem that the market needs to address, just like the mortgage-backed securities industry, we need to raise the quality of the ratings systems to assure that a ton of Carbon Credits actually represents a ton of C02 prevented from entering the atmosphere.

And still, the need for Carbon Markets, and the demand for legitimate Offset Credits remains, so this becomes an opportunity for companies and startups to deliver better and novel solutions.
This month, the Cleantech Council reviews the innovation coming from giant corporates, side-by-side with new technologies coming from startups and consortia, being pulled by policy and governments around the world to make sure Carbon Markets deliver on their promises. We’ll look at solutions for:
- offset validation, rating efficiency
- Carbon Offset projects
- project portfolios, curation, and administration
- credit trading markets
- the use of blockchain technology
Now, thus far, we’ve talked about Carbon Offsets, which refer to projects where CO2 is prevented from entering the atmosphere, and thus a credit is created. Even in the best of cases, Offsets don’t actually remove CO2, nor can they be considered permanent. But Carbon Capture, which pulls CO2 out of the atmosphere, and sequesters it in some long-term sink (for 1,000-100,000 years) can help the earth return to our prior climate equilibrium. Carbon Capture is starting to emerge from a variety of startups, who propose various methods of long-term sequestration. The cost per ton is still very high, but is expected to decrease as the innovators scale-up. A separate market for Carbon Capture Credits will be necessary since they are a different commodity than Offsets. Our meeting will also discuss these Carbon Capture startups, and the Carbon Credits they can offer.
