Quantum materials (QMs) are fundamental to the functionalities of our society. The novel properties of QM are enriched by the interplay among strong correlation, topology, and long-range entanglement. Despite the tremendous progress made in understanding QM in the past several decades, some outstanding questions remain. This includes understanding the correlation-enabled quantum state of materials, behavior of electrons and spin when correlation, topology, and entanglement are all at play, and novel fractionalized excitations. To make progress, a collective effort involving crystal growth, characterization, and theory throughout the entire community is needed. This workshop aims to bring together experts with diverse backgrounds to discuss progress and challenges in understanding QM, exchange new ideas and establish new collaborations. The topics that will be covered include:
- Correlated materials (heavy fermion, other unconventional superconductors)
- Topological materials (material with non-trivial band topology and/or hosting topological excitation in real space)
- Quantum spin liquid
- Low dimensional materials and their heterostructures
Organizers:
Shizeng Lin (LANL)
Marc Janoschek (PSI/UZH)
Ni Ni (UCLA)
Titus Mangham-Neupert (UZH)
We intend to support junior researcher (postdocs and students) presenting at the workshop. We have reserved several contributed talk slots for junior researchers. We highly encourage junior researchers to submit an abstract for consideration as one of our contributed talks. Additionally, we have allocated funds to support the attendance of junior researchers. Selective awards will be made up to $800 toward travel expenses (e.g., hotel and airfare). To apply to this funding, please:
1) Register before June 15.
2) Send an e-mail to Shizeng Lin (szl@lanl.gov) and Hao Zhang (zhang_h@lanl.gov) with a brief explanation of financial need and attach your title/abstract.
