Summary - Community Solar in US 2025

Community solar projects, make solar power more accessible to households, and are gaining massive traction in the United States. These projects help provide the various benefits of solar power to low-to-moderate income houses, renters, multi-family housings, small businesses, non-profits, and entire communities, by allowing these customers to either buy or lease or subscribe to a part of a bigger solar project and in turn offset their energy bills.

The popularity of this model in the United States is evident from the impressive growth trend of 500 per cent in the last six years. According to NREL, community solar project capacity has increased from a meagre 1.5 GW in 2018 to close to 8 GW in 2024. Further, to help tap the immense potential of the community solar market, half of the states in the United States already have active or announced community solar legislations.

Meanwhile, barring a few states, all others already have community solar projects installed, with more projects underway supported by tax credits, net metering schemes, grants, and other interventions. Going forward, interconnection and financing challenges need to be addressed to truly realize the immense potential in the space.
