Paediatric Symposium

Join us for the 2025 AuSPEN Paediatric Symposium – a unique opportunity to explore the latest advances in research and clinical practice in paediatric nutrition. The program features a dynamic mix of topics, including autologous islet cell transplantation, Crohn’s disease, hepatology, cystic fibrosis, parenteral nutrition. We’ll also cover key issues such as nutrition outcomes and cholestasis in the neonatal intensive care unit, tube feeding, body composition and finish with an exciting joint session with the HPN Symposium focused on disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). Whether you're looking to deepen your clinical knowledge, stay up to date with emerging research, or connect with colleagues from across the field, this symposium offers a valuable and engaging experience.

Workshop One - Prehabilitation Nutrition

There is emerging evidence around the positive impact that prehabilitation can have on post-operative surgical outcomes, and nutrition is a key component. This workshop aims to provide the latest evidence for prehabilitation, with a focus on nutrition interventions. Discuss key considerations for the implementation of prehabilitation and allow workshop participants to identify barriers and enablers for the implementation of prehabilitation within their workplace.  The workshop will be run by A/Professor Sharon Carey, Ms Kim Bostock and Ms Kristy-Lee Raso. Both Kim and Kristy are doing higher degrees related to prehabilitation.

ESPEN LLL Course  - Nutritional Support in Liver and Pancreatic Disease

The LIVER modules in this topic have been developed to highlight the complex metabolic and nutritional challenges associated with both acute and chronic liver disease.

Participants will learn about the key metabolic derangements in acute liver failure such as impaired glucose regulation, ammonia accumulation, and altered protein metabolism as well as the risks and considerations for amino acid and protein provision.

The modules also address the pathophysiology of nutrition disorders in chronic liver disease, including malabsorption, sarcopenia, and micronutrient deficiencies, and their impact on outcomes.

Practical, evidence-based strategies for nutritional support spanning assessment, route of feeding, macronutrient and micronutrient management, and use of branched-chain amino acids will be explored to equip participants with the tools needed to optimise nutrition care across the spectrum of liver disease.

ESPEN LLL Course  - Nutritional Support in Liver and Pancreatic Disease

The PANCREATIC modules in this topic have been developed to highlight the vital role of nutrition across the spectrum of acute and chronic pancreatitis.

Participants will learn to differentiate between mild and severe acute pancreatitis and understand how timely, adequate nutritional support can improve outcomes.

Evidence-based guidance on enteral and parenteral nutrition, including post-surgical care, will be explored. In chronic pancreatitis, participants will gain insight into the nutritional consequences of progressive exocrine insufficiency, malabsorption, and metabolic disturbances.

The modules will cover key treatment goals and practical interventions such as dietary strategies, enzyme therapy, and nutrient supplementation.

Together, these modules provide a comprehensive foundation for delivering tailored, effective nutrition care in both acute and chronic pancreatic disease.

Workshop Two - HPN Symposium

If you have an interest in Home Parenteral Nutrition please join the HPN symposium. This session will have a large focus on Disorders of Gut Brain Interaction, including a presentation from Professor Gerald Holtman on the management of motility medications. There will be a panel discussion on when (and when isn’t) parenteral nutrition suitable for this patient group. Other topics include palliative care and HPN, monitoring micronutrients and updates on the AuSPEN HPN registry and Model of care work.
