This workshop on Pilot Lines for emerging energy storage technologies will convene experts across the entire ecosystem to discuss our present state of affairs, identify the critical needs for pilot line capabilities, and propose approaches to resolve this key bottleneck to US energy storage innovation. Invitations extend to all industry leaders, investors, pilot line resources (hardware, software, human), and researchers from academics, national laboratories, small, and large companies.

The workshop begins with discussion of the unique challenges of pilot lines, historical context of today’s resource shortfalls, and the negative impact of this gap.  Next, there will panels of entrepreneurs discussing economic and technical considerations of their difficult manufacturing/commercialization paths, of pilot line providers today, and from small ecosystems participants that are doing well.

Throughout the workshop we analyze the present ecosystem and strategize on approaches to reduce this bottleneck.

 The workshop is part of a project whose objective is to generate a comprehensive report on the current state and future needs for emerging battery pilot line infrastructure – this is a first step with the ultimate goal of improving US energy storage dominance through improved manufacturing. Emerging chemistries/technologies that will be discussed include flow cells, lead acid, batteries with Zn anodes, sodium ion, all approaches to solid state, LiS, and power electronics.
