Event Summary
Antibiotic resistance is a serious and growing problem that threatens our national security and the entire health system. Infections are becoming increasingly difficult and sometimes impossible to treat, and patients are already requiring longer hospital stays, more procedures, and even losing their live as a result. Today there are simply not enough drugs in development to meet current and anticipated patient needs. At the same time, uniquely challenging market conditions have led nearly all major pharmaceutical companies to leave antibiotic drug discovery. The mostly small biotech firms that remain face significant commercial obstacles. Without federal action, the broken market will not deliver the antibiotics needed to avert a medical crisis.
The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) are working to develop and promote policies to reinvigorate the antibiotic pipeline and promote appropriate antibiotic use. Join us on March 7 to hear from leading experts about the need for a package of economic incentives to spur development of novel, innovative antibiotics
Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions following brief remarks from panelists.
