Airports have the potential to significantly contribute to a low-carbon future. Identifying solutions to electrify airport operations, including ground support equipment, passenger terminal facilities, and mobility from and to airports, has become crucial to realizing a cost-and-energy efficient airport infrastructure. However, electrification can be complex and airports will need to adapt and integrate transformative strategies and technologies to embrace the transition to net-zero operations.

The net-zero transition at airports is only possible with the support from federal and state governments and the collaboration of all stakeholders. About $25 billion of funding support is available under the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) for airport modernization and expansion projects, including those aiming for electrification of operations and transportation. These funds are being administered by the Federal Aviation Administration. Several state governments have also announced additional support for electrification projects at their airports.

After organizing successful conferences on Port Electrification, Fleet Electrification, Buildings Electrification, and EV Charging Infrastructure, Global Transmission Report is excited to launch its first conference on Airport Electrification to be held on March 20-21, 2024 at Marriott New York JFK Airport. The mission of the conference is to highlight opportunities and explore solutions for electrifying airport operations.

The conference will provide a platform to discuss how electrification of airport operations will meet net-zero, sustainability, and resiliency goals at the federal, state, and local levels. It will also highlight how airports are stepping up to meet the electrification challenge and how they should begin to understand future needs.

The event will bring together policymakers, airport authorities and operators, federal and state agencies, technology providers, electric power utilities, charging solution providers, and industry experts to present their perspectives, share the lessons learned, and discuss solutions and best practices for accelerating electrification at airports.
