NCI has a need to move beyond bibliometrics and identify new opportunities to assess and document the long-term impact of our portfolio of funded investigator-initiated research. This is a challenging endeavor because impact takes many forms and may not appear for years. Identifying observable short-term indicators of long-term impact would allow NCI to add a new dimension to consideration of its portfolio of funded research.

Thus, the purpose of this workshop series is to develop an understanding of how major  domains of cancer research create meaningful scientific and societal impact over time, and to identify the observable indicators that suggest those pathways are unfolding.

November 16: Identify Cross-Disciplinary Themes and Indicators of Cancer Research Impact

November 18: Synthesize the Indicators of Cancer Research Impact Across Time and Research Domain

The anticipated outcome of this workshop series is a set of short-term indicators that signal likely long-term impact for an investigator-initiated R01, with consideration of how the indicators operate across time and major cancer research domains. Developing a nuanced understanding of impact will support NCI’s funding decisions and portfolio assessment, which will contribute to maximizing the impact of the funding we award.
