An NCI Think Tank Dedicated to Understanding How a Funded R01 May Deliver Impact Over Time
Imagine if one day we could predict the impact of a submitted R01 application 5 years after funding ends.
Imagine being able to forecast the key outputs and impacts of a submitted R01-application five years after award funding is complete using markers of success.
Three Day Workshop Series:
12:00PM–4:30PM
Day 1: Identifying Elements Specific to Assessing Cancer Research Impact
Day 2: Identify Cross Disciplinary Themes and Indicators for Impactful Cancer Research
Day 3: Synthesize the Indicators of Impactful Cancer Research Across Time and Research Domain
Workshop Purpose
To develop a shared understanding of how different areas of cancer research create meaningful scientific and societal influence over time, and to identify the observable signals that suggest those pathways are unfolding, using the TSB Model as our foundation.
We don't develop good measures until we have a solid conceptual model of the thing we're trying to understand. That's the scientific approach and we will be applying it to research impact itself.
Workshop Goal
By the end of the workshop, we will have identified and organized candidate pathways of contribution, associated signals of progress, and potential intermediate endpoints across major domains of cancer research that can inform the development of a broader impact framework.
Cancer research creates enormous value, and many of its most important contributions are delayed, indirect, or difficult to recognize. As we better understand how meaningful influence unfolds over time, we can make better funding decisions, improve research portfolio evaluation, and enrich recognition of scientific contributions that matter.
