Learning Lab

Learning Lab is a FREE half-day field-trip style immersive experience for teachers and their students to come onsite to the Gene Editing Institute and perform an experiment in our cutting-edge laboratory space. Students additionally get the opportunity to meet with scientists to discuss gene editing and potential career pathways. Our typical Intro to Learning Lab and CRISPR in a Box sessions can accommodate up to 16 students.

For the fall of 2025, we are also offering a new 50/50 teaching model for CRISPR in a Box™ sessions to accommodate classes of up to 32 students. Please note your preference for session type when you sign up! We can only accommodate these larger class sizes in the fall; please plan accordingly.

If teachers have multiple classes to account for, we encourage them to reach out to our educators beforehand to ensure that we have the appropriate space to accommodate them.

Introduction to Gene Editing 360™ 

Created for freshmen and sophomores in high school, Introduction to Gene Editing 360™ teaches students the basics of gene editing, CRISPR, and experimental protocol. Students are given the chance to conduct a DNA extraction experiment using strawberries: an accessible and visual example of genomic science in action. They will also load a gel for electrophoresis using food dye, water, and glycerol to understand how molecules separate based on size.

CRISPR in a Box™

CRISPR in a Box™ is a course for juniors, seniors, and college students that allows students to edit a gene with CRISPR and see a color-change readout in a bacterial plate. A primer course preps students for an in-depth CRISPR experiment with a synthetic gene.

This experience takes place on the University of Delaware's STAR Campus at 550 S. College Avenue, First floor, Newark, Delaware 19713. This lab is available at no cost. More details and resources will be provided to teachers after completing registration for a session.
